The 11th edition of International Youth Competition in Memory of E. A. Mravinsky (Russia, St. Petersburg) – results

Another edition of International Youth Competition Memory of E.A. Mravinsky, held from November 4 to November 12, 2018, has come to an end with relevant results. Organisators of this exciting and challenging competition were the Government of St. Petersburg represented by the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg, Administration of Moskovsky District and the School of Art for Children named after E.A. Mravinsky.

The competition was held in two categories: woodwind instruments and brass wind instruments which were played in a 3-round programme, including compositions of various styles – from Baroque to modern music. 144 young musicians from different cities of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, People’s Republic of China, Spain took part in the XI Competition Memory of E.A. Mravinsky

The level of the young musicians was extremely high; there was a competitive struggle for entering each subsequent round for all specialties throughout the whole contest.

The main goal of the contest organisers was to discover talented young musicians and to promote their further advancement to the music stratosphere, challenging them to confront each other on an international stage.

The Jury members of the XI International Competition Memory of E.A. Mravinsky for the woodwind Instruments category were:

  • Kirill Sokolov – Honoured Artist of Russia, Professor of Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory, Chairman of the jury (Russia);
  • Wolfgang Wendel – Professor of Karlsruhe’s University of Music and Heidelberg School of Music (Germany);
  • Nikolay Mozgovenko – People’s Artist of Russia, Professor of Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, Professor of Schnittke Moscow State Institute of Music, soloist of the Russian National Orchestra (Russia);
  • Jin Jingchun – Professor of Central Conservatory of Music, Head of Brass Wind Instruments Division at College of Music under Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, soloist of Beijing Symphony Orchestra (China);
  • Algirdas Budrys – Professor, Head of Woodwind Instruments Department at Lithuanian Academy of Music (Lithuania).

For the brass wind instruments category the jury members were:

  • Vyacheslav Prokopov – Honoured Artist of Russia, Head of Brass Wind and Percussion Instruments Department, Professor of Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, Chairman of the Jury (Russia)
  • Dmitry Vorontsov – Honoured Artist of Russia, Associate Professor of Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory, soloist of Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra (Russia);
  • Igor Yakovlev – Honoured Artist of Russia, Associate Professor of Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory, Art Director of Brass Quintet of Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra (Russia);
  • Josef Bazhinka – Professor of the University of Pest (tuba class), soloist of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Hungarian Brass Quintet (Hungary).
  • Aavo Ots – Professor (trumpet class), Associate professor of Department of Wind Instruments at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (Estonia)

By decision of the jury, Vsevolod Trukhachev, French horn, Group B (Russia) was awarded with the EMCY prize.

Also this time the International Youth Competition Memory of E.A. Mravinsky has enchanted its spectators (worldwide thanks to the wide mass media coverage) with new young talents in a marvellous frame as St. Petersburg.
