Francesco Maffei was born in 2005 and has been playing trombone since the age of 7. He has studied at the Accademia Rondò di Nuvolera with Prof. Emanuele Quaranta and attended the Gaetano Donizetti Conservatory (Bergamo) with prof. Ermes Giussani.

In July 2018 he participated at his first competition, the International ‘Rizzardo Bino’ in Braone (Val Camonica Brescia) in the category of non-graduated soloists, where he received the first prize, with his brother Federico, as well the special prize as best talent under 18. In February 2021 he won the National Arts Award in the brass category, which was held at the San Pietro Majella conservatory of Naples and in May 2021 he participated in the ‘Città di Giussano’ competition Brass category, ranking first. In November 2022 he participated in the International Competition  for Young Instrumentalists ‘Gran Premio Povoletto’ winning the first prize in the category under 21, as well as the EMCY prize.

For several years he had regular masterclasses with Prof. Diego Di Mario, the first trombone player of the Rai National Symphony Orchestra. In February 2020 he participated in the masterclass with prof. Jorgen van Rijen, the principal trombone of the Royal Concertgebouw orchestra, and in April 2022 he passed the selection to participate in the Masterclass ‘Alessi seminar’ with teachers Joseph Alessi, first trombone of the New York symphony Orchestra, and Enzo Turriziani, principal trombone of Wiener Philharmoniker.

During the academic year 2021/22, Francesco won a scholarship in the Donizetti Conservatory of Bergamo at the competition organized by Rotary Bergamo. In June 2021 he was invited to play with the ONCI, the National Orchestra of Italian Conservatories, performing as first trombone ‘Pini of Rome’. In addition, he passed the selection to be able to participate in the Young Concertgebouw Orkest, as first trombone, which was held in August 2022 in Amsterdam. The orchestral production brought the young orchestra to perform the ninth symphony by Antòn Dvorak at important theaters such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
