The Ungdommens Musikkmesterskap (Norwegian Music Competition for Youth) ended on the 5th of September 2021.

The percussionist Åsmund Moen from Oslo has been named Musician of the Year in the Youth Music Championship 2020 – 2021.

‘This came as a surprise, and was not something I had expected’, says Åsmund Moen, who started playing drums like that at the age of two or three, and has never stopped since. He went via corps and cultural school in his home municipality of Nesodden and eventually to the music department at Ski upper secondary school. ‘It was probably when I chose the music line that I started to think that music could be something to do in the future’, says Åsmund. Today he is a master’s student at the Norwegian Academy of Music, and envisions a career as a freelance musician. – I like to play many types of music, so a life as a freelancer can suit me well.

During the UMM final in Oslo, the following participants were also named Talent of the Year in the younger age groups:

Felix Dalnoki
, cellist (Asker)
Clara Yuna Friedensburg, cellist (Oslo)
The violin duo Duo Canzona (Bergen)

Among the ensembles in the oldest age group, the prize Best Chamber Music Group was awarded to The Quintessence from Oslo. The ensemble was rewarded from the Norwegian Academy of Music’s scholarship funds. Part of the same scholarship went also to the other finalist in the class, the Momentum string quartet from Oslo.

The final concerts gave the finalists valuable experience in performing music in front of a jury and an audience consisting of their own, “brought” guests – at the same time as they competed for generous prizes and had the pleasure of hearing, meeting and getting to know other participants.
