In a remarkable display of international solidarity, the 15th International Volodymyr Krainev Competition for Young Pianists “Kharkiv meets Zurich” recently concluded amidst the serene Swiss mountains of Uster and Zurich. This remarkable event, founded on the ethos of collaboration and camaraderie, transpired against the backdrop of the ongoing brutal war in Ukraine, rendering it impossible to host the competition in its native Kharkiv. In light of these circumstances, we extend our deepest gratitude to our esteemed colleagues in Switzerland – Kantonsschule Uster and the Swiss association “Jugend beflügelt” – for their unwavering support in not only facilitating the competition but also underscoring the significance of cultural unity in an increasingly fractured world.

Drawing participants from 23 nations worldwide, the competition showcased not only the exceptional piano talents but also fostered invaluable bonds among young musicians, epitomizing the pivotal role of dialogue and cooperation in cultivating a harmonious global community. It is noteworthy that all participants endorsed the core principles outlined in the EMCY (European Union of Music Competitions for Youth) Statement, reaffirming their commitment to democratic values and peace-building efforts.

Central to the resounding success of the competition was the active involvement of students and faculty from Kantonsschule Uster, who contributed significantly to its organization and execution. Witnessing the auditorium brimming with enthusiastic students attentively applauding their peers underscored the profound impact of this collaborative endeavor. Moreover, the inclusion of a student jury alongside the esteemed panel added a refreshing dynamic, empowering young talents to contribute to the adjudication process.

An integral aspect of the event was the unwavering support extended to Ukrainian participants, including contestants, teachers, and organizers from Kharkiv. Notably, the final rounds, held at the Zurich University of Arts ZHdK, were enhanced by the stirring performances of the renowned Kyiv Camerata Orchestra, conducted with skill, sensitivity, and care by Maestro Dmytro Longvin. The whole event was a poignant reminder of the enduring power of music to transcend borders and unite hearts.

Looking ahead, we fervently anticipate the peaceful resurgence of the 16th International Volodymyr Krainev Competition for Young Pianists in its hometown of Kharkiv, serving as a beacon of triumph over adversity and unity forged through the collaborative spirit and creative energy of youth, rooted in democratic values, paving the path towards a harmonious and peaceful future. As a valued longstanding member of EMCY, the Krainev Competition continues to uphold its tradition of excellence and international camaraderie in the realm of classical music.
