The International Competition Piano Val de Travers is open to pianists of any nationality from 5 to 25 years old.

The competition was created for promotion of young talents in Switzerland. They are organizing concerts for their winners  in the way to motivate them in their music studies and helping them with their future carrier.

In this difficult time, the main part of the competition will be online with recordings for the first round of each category. It means that you don’t need to spend money for accommodation and plane tickets before you will be sure to become a finalist. The quality of jury judging will not be changed and vote will be always anonymous and impartial. All recordings will be published on the YouTube channel and you will be able to take a contact with jury members if you want to get a feedback of your performance. Only one thing what you need it’s to make good recording of first round and to send us a link with application form till 5th December! Application

Applicants will be admitted to participate in the competition only after the application fee is paid. Any application bank charges or commissions are payable by the applicant. The participant’s full name should be indicated in the payment reference. The application fee is non-refundable.

Category A 110 CHF bank transfer

or 120 Euro  via online platform

Category B 130 CHF bank transfer

or 140 Euro   via online platform

  • Passport photo
  • Copies of your diplomas
  • Receipt of the entrance fee payment
  • Link on YouTube or Vimeo with recording of first round for all categories: A, B and C. Recording must be in one link recorded without cuts.

The video must be recent (recorded within the last 12 months), filmed in a single take with no edits. The camera must remain fixed on the participant’s face and hands. Any audio or video editing is strictly forbidden, under penalty of disqualification. Recordings from other competitions are not accepted.

The title of your video must include:

Competition name: “Piano Neuchâtel – Val de Travers” 2027 / Participant’s first and last name / Date of birth / Category.

Rules

The competition is open to pianists of any nationality, born after 9 February 1999. The competitors are divided in three age categories:

Participants of the international competition will be divided into two age categories:
“A”- participants born on or after February 7, 2011
“B” – participants born on or after February 7, 1998

From each category maximum 20 candidates will be invited in Neuchâtel after jury decision.

The competition organizers reserve the rights to all audio and video recordings, photos, Internet publications and broadcasts of the performances and concerts during the competition.

Winners will participate in the final concert and any other events arranged by the competition organizers.

All works must be performed from memory except contemporary pieces written after 1960.

Competitor must bring to the jury tree copies of music score of his contemporary piece written after 1960.

The jury’s decision will be final and not subject to appeal.

By registering to participate in the competition, the applicant accepts the competition rules.

Repertoire

Category A: Participants born on or after February 7, 2011

The competition in Category A will take place in two rounds (first round after recording, second final round in Neuchâtel, February 6, 2027)
FIRST ROUND :
RECORDING IN ONE TAKE: duration of program (from minimum  8 minutes to maximum 12 minutes)
  • One virtuoso piece( study or presto or toccata or final movement of sonata)
  • One piece of free choice
  • If the total duration is under 8 minutes, you may add another piece of free choice.
SECOND ROUND: (maximum 20 finalists will be invited in Neuchâtel  February 6, 2027)
Free program max. 15 minutes
All works must be played from memory. Only works written after 1970 can be performed with music.

Category B: participants born on or after February 7, 1998

The competition in Category B will take place in three rounds (first rounds after recordings, semi-final and final round  in Neuchâtel  February 5 and 7,  2027)
FIRST ROUND :
RECORDING IN ONE TAKE :
  • One Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Books 1 or 2 by J. S. Bach
  • One study by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Debussy, Scriabin, Ligeti, Unsuk Chin or Rubinstein

Semi-final

February 5 / Neuchâtel Conservatory / Auditorium 1
maximum 20 selected candidates will be invited to play recital.
RECITAL of 25-30 minutes must include:
  • One or several pieces of free choice
  • One piece written after 1970
All works must be played from memory.
Only works written after 1970 can be performed with music.

Final round

February 7 / Temple du Bas, Neuchâtel
4 selected candidates with ensemble Les Solistes de Neuchâtel conducted by  Sergey Ostrovsky
One of the following concertos :
  • W. A. Mozart, Concerto No. 12, K. 414
  • L. van Beethoven, Concerto No 3, op. 37
  • F. Chopin, Concerto No 1, op. 11

1st prize : 1000 francs
2nd prize : 700 francs
3rd prize : 300 francs



Category B

1st prize : 4000 francs and a solo recital in 2028
2nd prize : 2000 francs
3rd prize : 1000 francs

Finalists will get 500 CHF and diploma


 

Special Prizes

  • EMCY Prize “entry card” to EMCY promotion: online profile with international visibility, concerts, tours and other opportunities in Europe for one of our winners between 14 and 24 years old.
  • Solo recital next year at WEpiano festival in Neuchâtel, Switzerland  (CHF 1,000)
  • Special “Val de Travers” prize: a solo recital at the Festival de la Chapelle in Couvet, 2028 (CHF 1,000)
  • Special prize: solo recital at the “Grange aux Ours-es” hall, France, 2027 (EUR 1,000)
