A wonderfully unexpected proposal came to EMCY mailbox this week. The greek music school in Nafplio organizes Musical Odyssey, a summer masterclass for piano and voice. This is an unusual summer school that provides sponsored concert opportunities for promising young musicians. They also provide the opportunity for their students to perform and rehears with the outstanding Megaron Youth Symphony Orchestra MOYSA at the Thessaloniki Megaron Concert Hall, whose chamber musicians will be joining the faculty.

This year they have also enlarged their list of concert prizes, offering to the students the chance to perform at:

-the Talent Unlimited lunchtime concert at their prestigious venue in London,
-the City University evening recital series,
-the Xeropigado International Festival in Greece,
-the Stonevale concert series at Oxfordshire,
-the Buscot Park Summer Festival of the National Trust, UK,
-two lunchtime concerts at the City Literary Institute, and
-the Thessaloniki Megaron Concert Hall recital in Greece.

In addition, this year the master classes will host internationally renowned teachers such as Mr Artur Pizarro on the faculty, Professor of Piano and Chamber Music at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra and a recipient of the Medal of Cultural Merit from the Portuguese Government. Mr. Pizarro performs internationally in solo recitals, with chamber music groups and as a soloist with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Philippe Entremont, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Sir Andrew Davis, Yuri Temirkanov, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Franz Welser- Most, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Libor Pešek, Ion Marin and John Wilson. After winning the Leeds Piano Competition in 1990, he released several “outstandingly beautiful” solo albums, and collaborations with the late Charles Mackerras & the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Vita Panomariovaite.

Another important presence will be Mr Denis O’Neill CBE at the vocal faculty, whose long career specialising in Verdi has been recognised through the Verdi Medal by the Amici di Verdi. His long association with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, covered leading appearances in over two hundred performances centered on the great Verdian roles. In the United States, appearances included the Metropolitan Opera, (LaTraviata, LaBoheme, Rigoletto, and Aida, among others) the San Francisco Opera (Mefistofole, Il Trovatore, La Sonnambula) and Chicago Lyric Opera (Capuletti e Montecchi). His extensive European career has taken him, most notably, to the Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera, Berlin State Opera, Deutche Oper Berlin, Arena di Verona, Rome Opera, and The Bolshoi Theatre on tour with La Scala, among others.

The dates for 2019 are from 18th to 25th of July included. The hotels and meals for students are subsidised for the Musical Odyssey masterclasses.

Don’t let this incredible summer adventure slip away from your hands, you have the chance to learn with fun.
