The International Competition for young pianists ‘Citta di Minerbio’ intends to present itself in a perspective of continuity, both as regards the objectives of excellence and talent development, and for the desire to involve the territory thanks to live events and exhibitions in which the candidates will be protagonists and which will give the event the breath of a music festival. The competition and the review take place annually and are reserved only for solo pianists, aged no more than twenty-six years old.

The competition is divided into 3 categories based on age (Cat. I up to 17 years, Cat. II up to 23 years, Cat. III without age limit). Each category involves two live performances on stage (first round, second round) with mandatory repertoire. Registration for the competition will be open from May 1 to September 10, 2025, the deadline for applications.

Application

Registration for the “International Competition for Young Pianists” can only be done online through the registration form on the website from May 1 to September 10, 2025. Registration may close before the deadline once the maximum number of 70 participants is reached.

Rules

The competition is divided into 3 categories based on age (Cat. I up to 17 years, Cat. II up to 23 years, Cat. III without age limit). Each category involves two live performances on stage (first round, second round) with mandatory repertoire. Registration for the competition will be open from May 1 to September 10, 2025, the deadline for applications.
Registrations may close before the deadline once the maximum number of 70 participants is reached. For each category, no more than 10 candidates will be selected and admitted to the final round.

Evaluations will be given in twenty-fifths and entered directly into a computer immediately after each performance, providing an objective mathematical average. Results will be announced at the end of each category. The overall winner of the competition and the winners of special prizes will be announced after all categories have been performed and must perform at the winners’ concert. The results for all categories will be made public at the end of the competition on the website www.minerbiopianocompetition.it

Repertoire

The competition is divided into 3 categories based on age (Cat. I up to 17 years, Cat. II up to 23 years, Cat. III without age limit). Registrations may close before the deadline once the maximum number of 70 participants is reached. For each category, no more than 10 candidates will be selected and admitted to the final round.

Cat. I: up to 17 years of age

This category includes two rounds: first round and second round.
The first round will last 8 minutes and be a free programme, which must include a piece from the Baroque or Classical period*.
The second round will last 15 minutes and be a free program, but must include a piece from the Romantic period and cannot include any piece performed in the first round.

Cat. II: up to 23 years of age

This category includes two rounds: first round and second round.
The first round will last 10 minutes and be a free programme, but must include a piece from the Baroque or Classical period* and a brilliant étude.
The second round will last a maximum of 22 minutes and be a free program, but must include a piece from the Romantic period and cannot include any piece performed in the first round.

Cat. III, without age limits

This category includes two rounds: first round and second round.
The first round will last 12 minutes and be a free programme, but must include a piece from the Baroque or Classical period* and a brilliant étude.
The second round will last a maximum of 25 minutes and be a free program, but must include a piece from the Romantic period and cannot include any piece performed in the first round.

Prizes

For each category, participation diplomas, merit diplomas, third prizes, second prizes, and first prizes will be awarded according to the mathematical score achieved. Tied prizes may be awarded. The overall winner of the category, who will receive a scholarship, will be the one with the highest score, provided they reach the appropriate artistic level (no ex aequo will be awarded for the overall first prize).

Offered by the MUNICIPALITY OF MINERBIO, to the overall winner of the competition, who will be chosen during the winners’ concert from the absolute winners of each category.

SPECIAL PRIZES

The following special prizes will also be awarded:

  • Special Romantic Prize: €500, offered by the MUNICIPALITY OF GRANAROLO DELL’EMILIA for the best performance of a Romantic piece.
  • Liszt Prize: €500, offered by the Liszt Institute Foundation of Bologna, along with a concert for the best performance of a Liszt piece.
  • Special Classical Prize: €500, offered by the MUNICIPALITY OF BARICELLA for the best performance of a Classical piece.
  • EMCY Diploma and Special Prize: Further promotion through the creation of a profile as the winner of the competition, opening up opportunities for concerts, tours, or other events in Europe.
  • Special Teaching Prize: For the teacher with the most students awarded.
  • Recording Contract: Offered by 2R Digital Classics, label of 2R Studio Produzioni Multimediali.
  • Other special prizes to be defined.

CONCERT PRIZES

The overall winner of the competition and candidates who have particularly distinguished themselves will be awarded concert prizes, offered by:

  •  1 concert by the Fondazione Istituto Liszt di Bologna
  • 1 concert by the Accademia Distretto della musica ADDM
  • 1 concert at Casa Barezzi in Busseto
  • 1 concert at the San Giacomo Festival
  • The opening concert of the 9th edition of the “Città di Minerbio 2025” Piano Competition
  • Other concerts to be defined.
