International Competition of Musical Art “Kharkiv Assemblies” is held annually at Kharkiv I.P. Kotlyarevsky National University of Arts (Kharkiv, Ukraine). It is the part of International Music Festival “Kharkiv Assemblies” which is one of the oldest classic music festivals in Ukraine.

The Competition gives an opportunity for further development to musicians from 14 to 40 years.

The main purpose of “Kharkiv Assemblies” is to promote and popularize widely musical art, to improve professional skills of the competitors and to expand international artistic ties.

The participants should be aged from 14 to 40 years old.
The Competition is held online, in two categories: “Piano” and “Double Bass”.



Every year





The Competition is open to musicians of all nationalities who were born on or after 2 October, 1979.

Applications are to be submitted by 15 September, 2020 by completing a form via link

An application must be accompanied with a link to the recording of the competitor’s performance of the programme. The face and hands of a contestant must be seen clearly

The file must be uploaded to cloud storage service (Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud etc.) and must be available for “anyone who has the link”. Preferred video format is .mp4.


The Competition is held online, in two categories: “Piano” and “Double Bass”. In category “Piano” contestants are divided into two age groups (14-17 and 18-40 years, respectively), in category “Double Bass” there is only one age group, 18-40 years. The age of contestant is determined on September 15, 2020. In all the categories the competition is held in one round.

The competition will take place from September 15 until October 15, 2020 and is open to Musicians of all nationalities.

The recording must not have transitions or other signs of montage, even between two pieces (except for category “Double Bass” between pieces with or without accompanist). It is not necessary for the recording to be of professional quality, but the jury members should be able to evaluate the contestant from it. The volume must not be either too quiet or too loud (with “overdrive” effect, crackling sound etc.).


Category “Piano” (both age groups)

  1. Sonata or Variation cycle by L. van Beethoven
  2. A work/ works of contestant’s choice (duration no longer than 10 minutes).

Category “Double Bass”

  1. Polyphonic piece for double bass solo (one movement of contestant’s choice):

– H. Fryba – Suite in the Olden Style
– J. S. Bach – Suite for Cello (arr. for double bass);

  1. Sonata for double bass and piano (2 movements of contestant’s choice) by: A. Mišek (in A major, e minor or F Major), F. Hertl, K. Reiner, P. Hindemith, F. Schubert (in A minor, “Arpeggione”), F. Proto (“1963”) or by L. van Beethoven (Sonata for French Horn and Piano, op. 17, arr. for double bass and piano).
  2. G. Bottesini – Concerto for double bass and orchestra №2 in B minor (I or II and III movements).

The order of performance of the programme is determined by the participants. The competition programme is performed by heart, except for Sonatas in category “Double Bass”. The last one may be played with scores.

All the pieces are to be played without repetitions.

In the category “Double Bass” competitor may choose the tuning of his instrument.

    • Depending on the results achieved by the contestants and within the limits of the set number of prizes the jury is authorized:


    • ─ to withhold prizes;


    • ─ to have performers share prizes;


    ─ award special prizes.
