perFORM Masterclass

For the first time, nine EMCY’s Prize Winners from different countries developed creative and promising concert formats, under the lead of the awarded stage professionals, musicians and composers of the New Ideas Chamber Orchestra (NICO).

The “classic” performance was questioned and redesigned through the collaboration with electronic music, dramaturgy and light art: recomposed classical music.

The one week masterclass intended to support young musicians in developing formats that make concerts a holistic experience.

The young European musicians should critically and creatively deal with concert design and formats and work out together alternative suggestions. The European dimension of the project promoted the creative thinking of the young musicians: to look “outside the box” and exchange ideas about concert situations in different countries and the state of the art of concert formats there.

The first edition perFORM was designed for prize winners awarded by EMCY member competitions. The instruments were: violin, viola, violoncello and double bass.

The teachers were: Augusta Jusionytè (violin and viola), Justas Kulikauskas (violoncello and double bass). The conductor and composer Gediminas Gelgotas held the masterclass on new concert formats, as well composition.

• Edgar Perestrelo, viola player and winner of the Premio Jovens Musicos
• Stefan Burchardt, violinist winner of the Øresunds Solist Competition
• Martynas Grigas, viola player and winner of the National Lithuanian Balys Dvarionas Piano & String Competition
• Justina Šimonyte, violinist and winner of National Lithuanian Balys Dvarionas Piano & String Competition
• Angel Spiroski, composer and piano player winner of Competition of the United Music and Dance Teachers of North Macedonia
• Alicja Pustuła, violinist
• Julia Starczewska, cellist

After one full week of masterclass with the teachers and players of the New Ideas Chamber Orchestra (NICO) the musicians performed a first open air concert in front of the Landesmusikakademie Rheinland-Pfalz and a bigger one in the Museum Sayner Hütte.

The last concert was accompanied by a light show organised by ABLight and filmed by professional movie makers imagefilm4u.
