International Competition ‘A Step Towards Mastery’ 2019 – results

Another competition of EMCY network has come successfully to an end. From 91 competitors that participated in the preliminary round only 61 musicians from 19 countries participated on the first round of the 12th International Competition for Young Pianists ‘A Step Towards Mastery’. The competition was held in full accordance with the published regulations, 25 participants being selected to the second round and only 9 for the last round.  The winners of the 12th edition are:

Category A
First Prize: Xu Jlayou (China)
Second Prize: not awarded
Third prize: Chepkin Ivan (Russia) and Tsygankov Konstantin (Russia)
Diploma: Kolesnikova Anna (Russia) and Cherotchenko Vasilii (Russia)

Category B
First Prize: Chen Daniela (Costa Rica)
Second Prize: not awarded
Third prize: Xu Jlayou (China)
Diploma: Davidyuk Aleksander (Russia), Ko Chen-Yen (Taiwan) and Xia Duoduo (China)

Category C
First Prize and EMCY Prize: Kalmykov Timofei (Russia)
Second Prize: Ruan Yangyang (China)
Third prize: not awarded
Diploma: Lee Geonhee (Republic of Korea)

A special prize for the best performance of Frederic Chopin’s work from Lucius Pinkosch, director of the «Juliusz Zarebski International Music Competition» was awarded to Ruan Yangyang (China)

The first two rounds of the competition were held in the concert hall of children’s school of Arts Nr.4 (Bucharestskaya ul.,35), the 3rd Round was held at the Grand Hall of the St. Petersburg State Capella , conductor – Anatoliy Rybalko. The closing ceremony and the concert were held in the Small hall of Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic.

The Jury members of the competition were Avedis Kuyumjian (Austria), Frank Joachim Reich (Germany), Justas Dvarionas and Lucjusz Pinkosz (Poland). The chairman of the jury was Ekaterina Murina (Russia) and the guest of honor was Maria Teresa Vejborny (Austria), jury member of 3 – 9 contests “Step to Mastery’’.

Special thanks to the general director of the competition Victor Ekimov, for his investment in the young musical talents of tomorrow, establishing such a high calibre competition that is an asset for our network
