Leonid Plashinov-Johnson was born in Russia and began studying the violin when he was three years old. He moved to the United Kingdom when he was six years old. He was a student at the Yehundi Menuhin School in Surrey between the ages of 11 and 18, where he studied under Lutsia Ibragimova. During his last year of school Leo switched to the viola and has since studied with Andriy Viytovych. In the in the autumn of 2015, he will join the studio class of Kim Kashkashian at the New England Coservatory.

Leo has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral member in many venues across Europe, including Wigmore Hall (London), Windsor Castle, Musicgebouw (Amsterdam), Saanen Church (Gstaad, Switzerland), Reims Cathedral (France) and Solsona Theatre (Spain), where he played the Hoffmeister D major viola concerto with the AIMS 2014 chamber orchestra as a result of victory in the AIMS 2014 concerto competition. In March of 2015, Leo participated in the International Competition 'Young Virtuosos' held in Sofia, Bulgaria, and was awarded joint 2nd prize, no 1st prize was awarded. Leo has also collaborated with artists, including Heinrich Schiff, Jeremy Menuhin, Alina Ibragimova, Valeriy Sokolov, Charlie Siem and Tasmin Little. He also has toured across Asia as part of the 'Covent Garden Soloists' Orchestra, directed by Vasko Vassilev.
