Conference for EMCY´s International Competitions & INTER-NATIONAL net_works+ meeting

25.11.2015

«This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.» Leonard Bernstein

With these words the President of the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY), Paul Scholer, called for a minute of silence to commemorate the victims of the Paris terror attacks at the opening of EMCY´s Conference for International Competitions & INTER-NATIONAL net_works+ meeting.

The Conference brought together Europe´s finest talent scouts: directors of 17 youth music competitions from 14 European countries addressed pressing topics as audience development and sponsorship and created sustainable cooperation, thus enhancing the quality of support systems for young musicians.

The Conference took place on 20th–22nd November 2015 and was hosted by the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar (DE), organisers of EMCY´s members International Franz Liszt Competition for Young Pianists and the International Louis Spohr Competition for Young Violinists.

EMCY´s membership showed great interest in a planned cooperation of EMCY with the star violinist Julia Fischer for a festival and concert tour with EMCY Prize winners. Beyond that they engaged in new collaborations for Europe-wide tours of prize winners, featuring innovative concert formats.

Working sessions were hold on how musicians can effectively engage audiences, (inter)national press work of EMCY and its members to broaden their scope and the benefit of volunteers at youth music competitions.

Broad agreement was reached on contemporary works at youth music competitions: EMCY will actively support the exchange and wide access of recently composed European works that were commissioned by its member competitions all over Europe.

The EU funding programmes Creative Europe and Erasmus+ were presented and examples of concrete projects as well different funding and sponsoring strategies introduced.

The Conference took place in the framework of the Erasmus+ Strategic partnership project INTER-NATIONAL net_works+ and was co-funded by the European Union. It was chaired by EMCY´s Vice President for International Competitions, Justas Dvarionas. The Conference benefitted from different guest speakers: the director of the Podium Festival Esslingen, Steven Walter; Christian Bergmann, board member of the Staatskapelle Weimar and Judith Drühe, dramatic advisor and responsible for the children and youth programme of the Staatskapelle Weimar.

Musical highlights of the Conference comprised Danilo Kunze (guitar, DE) and Can Cakmur (piano, TR), prize winners of EMCY Member Competitions.
